An Introduction To An Idea

As 2009 comes to an end, I find myself re-evaluating the major aspects of my life; where have I been? where am I now? where am I going?

I realized that my life post-post-secondary education is not exactly what I had imagined; I am feeling more lost than when I took CEE 490 Dynamics of Structures. My professors and colleagues assured me the engineering workforce was awaiting my arrival; I would be able to help mold and shape the world for the betterment of all society, and my pocket would be overflowing with cash. Well, that situation was simply not realistic. The education system is one aspect of my culture that needs serious reconsiderations.

Whilst struggling through my endless assignments and exams, I dreamed of the day when I could say, “I am free of obligations! I can travel and explore the world and be in control of my immediate destiny”. But after graduation, reality brought me a desk, computer, decreasing satisfaction and increasing unhappiness. So much for the glorious travelling life experiences I’d hoped for.

Two and a half years later, the opportunity arose to embark on a family vacation deep into the southern United States; a three-week vacation was a great way to end the roller coaster ride that was 2009. Any regular chap would be satisfied with that, but not me. I had finally reached a point where I did not have any obligations; I left my desk job behind months earlier and I had no car/house/wife and/or kids of my own.
