I realized that my life post-post-secondary education is not exactly what I had imagined; I am feeling more lost than when I took CEE 490 Dynamics of Structures. My professors and colleagues assured me the engineering workforce was awaiting my arrival; I would be able to help mold and shape the world for the betterment of all society, and my pocket would be overflowing with cash. Well, that situation was simply not realistic. The education system is one aspect of my culture that needs serious reconsiderations.

Whilst struggling through my endless assignments and exams, I dreamed of the day when I could say, “I am free of obligations! I can travel and explore the world and be in control of my immediate destiny”. But after graduation, reality brought me a desk, computer, decreasing satisfaction and increasing unhappiness. So much for the glorious travelling life experiences I’d hoped for.

Two and a half years later, the opportunity arose to embark on a family vacation deep into the southern United States; a three-week vacation was a great way to end the roller coaster ride that was 2009. Any regular chap would be satisfied with that, but not me. I had finally reached a point where I did not have any obligations; I left my desk job behind months earlier and I had no car/house/wife and/or kids of my own. It was time to take the adventure from my deep subconscious and make it a reality.

It was decided that once I left Ontario, I would only return when the snow had melted (bye-bye winter blues, hello Sunshine States) or I became satisfied with my findings.

I never understood people’s distaste for true and meaningful conversations with each other; why lie, cheat and steal from close “friends” or family? It seems counterproductive to human development, awareness, and spiritual achievement. There is nothing more important in my life than truth, respect, love and the individual perspective.

As of this moment, I am not yet satisfied with my own personal progress. My plan is to satisfy another dream of mine from my university days; to visit Vancouver during the 2010 Winter Olympics and submerse myself in the perspectives of the global community.

I’d like to formally invite the global community to share their perspective on music, art and culture in the community within which they live, or have lived. Share your truths with the MOCtalk Collective and we will in turn share it with the world via the Wild Wild World of Web and our travelling 2011 “this is me and this is my perspective” Art Exhibition.

If nothing else, it will prove people appreciate opportunity and following your heart creates magical results.

The more I sit back and enjoy my body buzzing and gearing up for a trip of a lifetime, I hear voices in the distance. “Nahhhhhhh, can’t be, I’m gonna have a sweet trip”. The voices are getting closer. The trees are getting darker and swaying all the way to the ground. “I’m OK, the acid is kicking in and I just have to let it take me away”. The grass is wet for some reason, it hasn’t rained for days. “It’s all good. Take a deep breath”. Something is weird. It is not flowing for some reason. Was that a shadow? I look at my hands to see if the trip is really happening and sure there are trails beyond belief but why are my hands dripping red? What is going on? I need to stop this? SOMEONE IS COMING AFTER ME? BREATHING DOWN MY NECK AND SLOWLY SEEPING INTO MY EARS. I CAN’T STOP THIS MADNESS? I HAVE TO RUUUUUUNNNNNN.

As I write these articles, it seems as though drugs seem to be a reaccuring topic. Not that I partake in massive amounts, I just like what the drugs represent in a high state. The trip, the colours, the dreams. So naturally I look for these qualities in movies, especially fear films. The darkness, the music, the scenery, the monsters. Always thought about in one way or another, just when put to the screen, it translates a different perpective. So who out there likes to dabble in offbeat imagery? The one that comes to mind nowadays would be this man, Dante Tomaselli. I received a copy of this indie produced film entitled HORROR, aptly titled. So off I went. The one downfall I found with this film is the way drugs are represented, sure you trip out but we are not that gullable as he portrays them as, but that is not what I want you to think of this film as. I want you to close your eyes and put yourself into a state of negativity.

What would your dark dreams be about???????????????

Who would be after you?????????????

Where would the scary places be????????????

That film is surreal and very brutal. So in reality, many years later and myself being somewhat of a filmmaker, he was still on my mind (ohhhhhh Dante) and I had to get a few questions out of my chest (insert chest bursting sound here).

CC-So what is this continuous exploration into trippy topics and scenery. i haven’t seen all your movies but HORROR was pretty out-there. Do you not like drugs and want the people to feel a savage point or you like drugs and just love trippy shit?

DT-Well, I didn’t smoke my first joint until I was about 24. I went to college in Brooklyn and New York City in the late 80′s and early 90′s. Everybody was smoking and doing all sorts of drugs all around me. You couldn’t escape it. I just said no, every time. My mind was already hallucinating. Plus I have synesthesia. Sound-color. I didn’t need anything else. Something like a bug buzzing in my ear could cause my nervous system to go haywire. Sounds of rain…fiber optic dots…My movies are more about my childhood nightmares. Growing up I was afraid of taking drugs, so I stayed away. I was also afraid of going to Hell…I probably needed something…a pill…a joint…because I was so repressed. My films are really about peeling back layers of pain and guilt buried deep in the unconscious mind.

CC-So what is up with you right now, you’re in production on a new movie?

DT-Pre-production…on TORTURE CHAMBER, my fourth feature. A horror shocker about a demonically possessed 13-year-old boy who escapes from an asylum and discovers an old abandoned castle with a secret passageway to a cobwebbed torture chamber.

CC-I haven’t seen anything about THE OCEAN. what’s up with that one?

DT- I didn’t abandon it…TORTURE CHAMBER is a lower budgeted film and should pave the way for more expensive projects like THE OCEAN.

CC-You compose your own material? What gives you inspiration for your films? Composers? Bands? Chat it up about music.

DT-Yes, I’ve been composing…or sound designing…the bulk of soundscapes in my films. I need elemental sounds like earthquakes, avalanches, volcanoes, landslides…They create…a kind of emotional violence. They conjure visions. I paint with sounds. Also…animals like screaming pigs, snarling dogs in reverse…I’ll mix and match whatever works…I need a huge palette of sounds, tones, compositions.

These days I like to collaborate with other composers too. I want to present the best soundtrack experience possible. It should be 3-D-like. I think the soundtrack is 50% of the film’s equation. I always put a big emphasis on it. I’m definitely influenced by early John Carpenter…Halloween and The Fog. That low-toned Moog synthesizer sound. I also admire Coil. I think if I ever made music full-time it would sound a bit like Coil. I could only hope. I love Ric Ocasek…His mixture of guitars and synths. His imaginative lyrics. I love synth pioneers like Wendy Carlos…She scored The Shining…Vince Clark…Alan Wilder…Laurie Anderson…Kim Cascone…

CC-What have you shot your films with? Camera?

DT-All of my films have been shot on Super 16 mm film with Arriflex cameras. I need to pack each frame with a lot of detail. I crave a painterly, textural image. I love working with the cinematographer and production designer, composing the vision. There are lots of tricks with shadows, diffusion, widescreen lenses, mist, refracted lighting…I want the viewer to taste color and touch sound.

See what i mean? Now go and have a safe and scary trip my friends. I’ll see you there.

Jim Van Bebber. With such films as the classic revenge film DEADBEAT AT DAWN, KATA, ROADKILL: THE LAST DAYS OF JOHN MARTIN, MY SWEET SATAN, DOPER and a few music videos such as SKINNY PUPPIES video collection and NECROPHAGIA’s -Through The Eyes Of The Dead. Make-up on DB A D, which you have to see is pretty savage, acted in many a films. edited, and whatever else brings on indie mayhem. So as you can see, or read about if anyone here hasn’t heard of this dude, he’s into some pretty crazy shit. He’s always referenced in magazines for his links to killer music and taboo subjects. So I thought i’d throw him a few questions because I just need to know……..

So Jim, what’s been goin’ on with yourself lately?

You love music, especially some dark shit. what have you worked on?

You’ve been workin on the manson family film for a while, finally finished correct? Phil Anselmo helped with the soundtrack correct?

Deadbeat at Dawn has become such a cult underground hit, what was with doin’ a sort of vigilante film instead of a horror which you seem to be quite associated with.

Dark sky films is gonna re-release some of your work?

Would you chalk up your inspiration from drugs, music, movies or all of the above?

What are some of your favourite tunes to listen to?

As i anxiously await his answers, this is what i get………….

So………….

“The Manson Family” was finished in 2003 and had a 22 city theatrical run in 2004. It was recently included by Dark Sky Films as part of a 4-Disc Box Set: “Visions Of Hell: The Films Of Jim VanBebber”…Myself and Mike King covered the 2006 Down Tour…Don’t know what’ll happen with that…it’s in Phil’s hands…Trying now to launch “CAPONE: The King Of Crime”.

Take Care, Jim VanBebber

Wellllllllll, i guess that was that.

Seriously, if i’m not fuelled up by any new sounds, guitars, space searing keys then i get bored fast. Maybe it’s my severe case of a.d.d. but thats how I work people. Mental illness is a serious issue and i crave new tunes like I jonse for RID. So here i am cruisin’ through live venue 73′s myspace (www.myspace.com/73stpaul), which i totally dig cause tons o’ tunes go through this place and let me tell you, in my fried state of mind, when i came across this band, YOB came to my head the instant some arterial feedback began dirging my ears. Then like a fuckin bulldozer, slow creeping doom? Oh boy, right up my alley. From around here? Are you kidding me? God damn yaaaaaa, and on the record, the first few YOB albums are among the most killer doom ridden psychedelic albums ever. AAAAAmazing.

Shane Tyrer (drums) goes on to tell me that their direct influences come from NEUROSIS, YOB (i knew it), HIS HERO IS GONE, ASUNDER and BURIED AT SEA, which totally show. This band, which was created over a year ago really take the sludge impact seriously.

From what Shane spews out about the band, “I feel we all wanted to create something louder, darker and heavier than anything else ever heard in Niagara. We wanted to write music that could deliver a relentless sonic assault on the listener from beginning to end. From the reaction we’ve received, I feel we’ve been effective in what we’ve been trying to create. “and It certainly is.

Nothing has been officially released as of yet, but you can download their ep here (www.mediafire.com/?nt1zzzvmjiu )and check out their tunes and info at www.myspace.com/iamsoundasleep. Shane has informed myself that they are working on a follow-up as we speak and would love to have it out by early 2010. So what I’m gonna do is try and save up as much weed as possible, maybe even a few brownies and fuckin crank that shit when it comes across my ears. God dam ya, it’s lovely to see bands that i really appreciate form in this area. I don’t have to go far at all, especially when i’m high as fuck.
